The Confederate Philatelist
The Confederate Bulletin,
actually a more “occasional” publication than one regularly issued
(especially during World War II), was the first official journal of the
Confederate Stamp Alliance — generally a four-page digest-size affair
published in the 1940- 1952 period by its editor, August Dietz. No
longer in the business of publishing a full-scale periodical then,
Dietz made sure the Alliance had a member organ.
What would later become the Confederate Philatelist began publication with Volume 1, No. 1 in February 1956 as the Confederate Stamp Album edited by David Kent. Though it changed its name to the Confederate Philatelist in May 1958 under editor Henry M. Spelman, III, our journal’s sequence of volumes has remained unbroken since February 1956.
Although published information on various aspects of Confederate philately dates back to the 1870s, it wasn’t until the early 1920s that authoritative information began to be published. August Dietz, Sr. an avid collector, researcher and writer of Confederate philately, is considered the Father of Confederate Philately.
Although, the Confederate Stamp Alliance was formed in 1935 at the suggestion of Dr. Marye Y. Dabney to August Dietz, there was no “official publication” in those first few years. Information to members was disseminated through Stamp and Cover Collecting, a monthly stamp journal edited by August Dietz.
The first publication exclusively for Alliance members was the Confederate Bulletin, a small pamphlet of 27 issues put out between early 1940 and August 1952. The first two issues were printed without a date. From September 1952 until February 1956, members of the Alliance obtained their official information from the monthly newsletters of the Secretary-Treasurer, Haydn Myer (September 1944 - August 1948) and Thomas W. Crigler (September 1948 - August 1959).
Beginning in February 1956, the Alliance again had its own monthly publication, the Confederate Stamp Album. Beginning in January 1960, the publication was renamed the Confederate Philatelist and continued as a monthly publication through April 1967. In May of 1967, the CP became a bi-monthly journal. In January 1972, the name of the publication was changed to The Confederate Philatelist, the name that it still retains. The Confederate Philatelist was reformatted to a larger size in January 2005 and became a quarterly publication.
Over the years, various newsletters were published
periodically to inform the membership of upcoming activities.
Newsletter editors included Haydn Myer, Tom Crigler, Frank Crown, Jerry
Palazolo, Ron Tate, Rick Calhoun, Jim Monroe and currently Larry Baum.

The Philatelic Magazines of August Dietz, Sr.

The seeds of the future Confederate Stamp Alliance were planted by our founder as early as 1899 when August Dietz’s Virginia Philatelic Publishing Company unveiled The Virginia Philatelist, a journal of stamp collecting that was also the first member organ of the Southern Philatelic Association (later to become the Society of Philatelic Americans). As with subsequent publications of his, Dietz used The VP’s pages to disseminate the growing knowledge base of Confederate stamps and covers. The VP ceased publication in January 1905.
By November 1924, Dietz’s urge to publish a periodical again took hold when he began The Southern Philatelist— continuing in this monthly to publish large amounts of information on CSA philately. In November 1929, he changed the magazine’s name to The New Southern Philatelist. Finally ceasing publication of the latter in October 1933, he immediately founded its replacement, the monthly Stamp and Cover Collecting, in order to appeal to a broader, more national audience. In January 1937, the latter became The Stamp and Cover Collecting Review, a quarterly “Reader’s Digest” type of magazine that recounted various happenings in philately every three months. This magazine ceased publication at the end of 1939, the last of Dietz’s ventures in philatelic magazine publishing.
It was in the last two of these magazines that August Dietz introduced and promoted the founding of the Confederate Stamp Alliance beginning in the March 1935 edition of Stamp and Cover Collecting.
Following are checklists of the above publications.
