The "CSA March on Charleston 2001" organized by Gen Tony Crumbley was held this past weekend (30 MAR - 1 APR 2001) at the Holiday Inn Historic District in Charleston SC. Approximately 35 CSA Members (many with spouses also attending) converged on Charleston for a weekend of Confederate Philatelic fun and fellowship using the very informal format that has been and continues to be very successful. CSA Generals in attendance were: Gen Tony Crumbley, Gen Conrad Bush, Gen Harry McDowell, Gen Peter Powell, Gen Jerry Palazolo, Gen Ron Tate. Much exchanging of ideas and information took place as well as a significant amount of buying, selling, and trading of CSA philatelic material. Evening activities (sometimes into the late hours) as is usual for CSA events focused on the Hospitality Room. Some members also brought sections of their exhibits and private collections for viewing by all thus providing an opportunity for all to see some very scarce material that is not normally available for viewing. Two formal slide lectures were presented on Saturday afternoon. Col Joe Holleman gave an excellent and detailed presentation on "The Blockade Mail" and CSA Member Dr. Charles Peery gave an equally interesting presentation on the "Port of Charleston" and its importance as a major blockade runners port during the war. Col Holleman also works with the CSS Hunley preservation and excavation team and filled everyone in on the current progress of the work. The CSS Hunley is not as yet open to the general public as the excavation of the interior has just begun, but Col Holleman arranged a trip out to the laborary to see the Hunley for those CSA members still in Charleston on Sunday. Members in attendance for the long weekend took full advantage of the excellent location and the historic setting. Some made the trip out to Fort Sumter, while others took advantage of the excellent Walking Tours which are held in the historic area of Charleston. All in all, it was a highly successful CSA Philatelic Weekend Gathering. Our thanks to Gen Crumbley for organizing the event and for a job well done.
