CSA CONVENTION
St Louis Stamp Expo 2003
7-9 MAR 2003

A very successful CONFEDERATE STAMP ALLIANCE Convention was held 7-9 MAR 2003 in St. Louis MO in conjunction with the St. Louis Stamp Expo 2003 show. CSA Members and Guests enjoyed the 58th traditional Southern Supper held Friday Night 7 MAR 2003 at the Cheshire Inn in St. Louis in conjunction with the 75th Anniversary dinner of the Webster Groves Stamp Club. The combined event was highly successful, an excellent dinner was served, and a good time was had by all. A special thanks to Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries who sponsored the traditional social hour prior to the Southern Supper and to Stanley Piller & Associates who sponsored the dinner wine. The presentation of the CSA exhibit awards took place at the Southern Supper with CSA President Col Dan Warren MD presiding and Col Dick Corwin, Col Jim Bowman, and Col Dan Warren as members of the judging panel. The following exhibit awards were presented:

  • Col Ed Close -- "Prisoners' Mail During the War for Southern Independence" (one-frame) -- CSA Brian and Maria Green Award and APS Vermeil Medal.
  • Col Buck Boshwit -- "Confederate States Adversity Covers" (one frame) -- CSA Roger Weil Award and APS Silver Medal.
  • Col Jim Monroe -- "Selected Confederate Covers and the Stories Behind Them" -- CSA General's Award and APS Silver Medal.
  • Col Van Koppersmith -- "Mobile, Alabama Outside of the Union" -- CSA John W. Kaufmann Memorial Award and APS Gold Medal.
  • Gen Ron Tate -- "Confederate States of America" -- CSA William G. Bogg Memorial Award and APS Vermeil Medal.
  • Gen Roger Oswald -- "Confederate States of America Stampless Covers" -- CSA Robert A. Siegel Memorial Award and APS Gold Medal.
  • Gen Tony Crumbley -- "Independent State and Confederate Mail of North Carolina" -- CSA John H. Regan Award and APS Gold Medal.
  • Col John Birkinbine II -- "Union and Confederate Mails in New Mexico / Arizona during the Civil War" (one-frame) -- CSA Trustee's Trophy, APS Gold Medal, and the APS One-Frame Champion.
  • Col Steven C. Walske -- "Special Postal Routes Across the Lines During the American Civil War" -- CSA President's Trophy, APS Gold Medal, Postal History Society Medal, APS Pre-1900 Medal, and APS Grand Champion.
  • Gen Conrad L. Bush -- "Cancels & Handstamps on the Confederate General Issue Stamps" -- CSA Jack E. Molesworth Award and APS Vermeil Medal.
  • Col Buck Boshwit -- "The War Years, Tennessee 1861-1865" -- CSA Trophy and APS Gold Medal.

 

In addition to the above CSA Exhibits, two CSA Members exhibited non CSA material.

  • Gen Conrad L. Bush -- "Postage Stamps, Currency and the War Between the States 1861-1865" (one frame) -- APS Bronze Medal.
  • Col Arnold H. Selengut -- "150 Years of US Precancels" -- APS Gold Medal, The United States Stamp Society Award, Reserve Grand Champion.

 

Many thanks to all the exhibitors for sharing their collections with us and making this CSA Convention nothing less than a spectacular presentation of Confederate Stamps and Postal History. Also a special thanks to Gen Peter Powell who conducted a two-hour hands on seminar which was very well attended on Friday afternoon on the identification of fake and phony CSA stamps and postal history.

At the Show Awards Banquet, CSA Member Col Elizabeth Pope was presented with the Medal for Lifetime Contribution to Philately. The Confederate Stamp Alliance extends its congratulations to Elizabeth for this great achievement.

The General Business Meeting was held Saturday Morning 8 MAR 2003 with CSA President Col Dan Warren presiding. The minutes will be published in a later edition of the Confederate Philatelist. The major writing awards were presented at the General Business Meeting --

  • The Haydn-Meyer Award for Service was not presented this year.
  • The CP Writer's Award was presented to Gen Peter W. W. Powell for his article "The 3c Nashville Tennessee Post-Secession Provisional" in the Jul-Aug 2002 issue.
  • The August Dietz Award for research and publishing was presented to Col John L. Kimbrough MD and General Conrad L. Bush for their recently published book Collector's Guide to Confederate Philately. Click the title to see how to order a copy of this award winning book for yourself.
